Can I put on fake nails while waiting for the real nail to grow?

I have recently lost a big toe nail due to a shoe accident. I live in south florida, land of the open toed shoes, it can take as little as six months as long as nine for the toenail to grow completely back, can i put on a fake nail in the meantime to avoid looking like a freak? I can't wear close toed shoes for six months!Can I put on fake nails while waiting for the real nail to grow?
