How can I keep my natural nails from breaking off when I remove my acrylic tips?

I have been wearing acrylic nails for about six months. I don't do gel nails because they burn my fingers whenever I get them done. My natural nails are now super long and I want to take off the acrylic tips and get an overlay on my real nails. How can I take them off without causing my natural nails to break? How can I keep my natural nails from breaking off when I remove my acrylic tips?
The best way I can think of is a bit time consuming, but you can soak them off. I found a website that gives step by step to soaking them off. The site tells you to cut your acrylic nails shorter, but since you want to keep them long, you can just skip it.
