How long should the nails be on my dog?

I have a mini german schnauzer (22 pounds). I'm afraid to cut them too short. Is there a good way to tell? Thanks for your help!How long should the nails be on my dog?
If your dogs nails tap on the ground or even touch the ground, they need to be clipped. Dogs walk on the toes. Imagine yourself walking on your own toes and toenails all day. go from there. You can see the cuticle of your dogs nails however is you are afraid of hurting your dog, take him to the vet.How long should the nails be on my dog?
if they are touching flat ground they are to long
go in milimetre by milimetre if you have to do them yourself but if you do make the dog bleed he wont ever let you near his nails again take him to the vets. with regular walks the dog shouldnt really need his nails cutting as they get filed down while been outside
When you look at the under side of the nails, you can see the quik (vein) of the nail. You should trim the nails back just above that quik. Most times you'll just need to snip the tip off.
if he pokes holes in a waterbed then they may be a tad too long
Best to get a vet to do it really. If you can look closely at the nails and they're not black nails you should be able to see the quick - where the white of the nails turns pink, like with ours. Don't cut past that line, as that's the nail bed and it will bleed! If the nails are black i sympathise, I HATE cutting black nails - sometimes if you look really hard you can just about make out a quick, but otherwise you have to just take small bits of the nail off a bit at a time and hope for the best. This is why it's best to get a vet to do it - they have styptic pencils or ferric chloride on hand to stop the bleeding!





Maybe if you get a vet to show you once you'll be able to do it after.

If you can hear them tapping on the ground when your dog walks, they are too long. Hold them up to the light and find the ';quick';, and cut in front of it so as not to nick it. If the dogs nails are black, just take the little ';hook'; off the end. Have some stiptik powder like ';Quik Stop'; on hand just in case you do nick it.
